More reasons not to trust politicians !
I have not had much of a stomach for politics of late . And for anybody paying attention I think I do not need to explain my reasons for that. In calendar year 2009 any thinking adult has probably had more then they,re fair share of complete disgust with any one of a number of politicians whom have completely betrayed our trust and left us ever more angry as a collective nation . Now I know most of us are to busy keeping tabs on Tiger and that no talent cliche Adam Lambert to pay attention to what is really going on . However when I originally joined Hubpages I came in with a personal mission of making you aware of the ugly truth . Because I am of the mindset that you have to acknowledge the problem first before you can fix it ! As time has gone on my disgust has grown to the point where even I needed a diversion and started writing and posting lighter fare .
However today I happened upon a story I found so deplorable I felt the necessity to make you aware of it as well . On the other seaboard far from the comfy confines of San Diego in the city of Baltimore mayor Sheila Dixon was convicted of embezzling $600.00 dollars worth of gift cards from Target and Best Buy . The conviction was a misdemeanor classified as " fraudulent misappropriation of a fudiciary " . Now you may ask why my outrage ? And that is indeed a legitimate question . The reason this gets my dander up is because this was a gift by a prominent developer in that city that was to be designated for the more impoverished citizens of that city ! So as I see it , Robin Hood is taking from the poor and giving to the privileged ! After all I guess I should not be surprised , this is pretty common practice by both parties except they call it campaign contributions right ?
Now I can almost assure you that you may not have heard this . And I can understand some of the reasoning behind it as our President gave a major policy speech not more then an hour ago . And another disconcerting element in all this is the fact that Ms.Dixon has been under investigation for the last four years . And this is another element that perplexes me , why do we let officials under investigation no matter how small the offense go about their business ? Now call me crazy but is that not kinda stupid ? I have always felt they should be immediately removed from any decision making once under investigation . After all they are making policy that affects yours and my life , and then are exempt from living under these same policies !
Granted $600.00 is a pretty paltry sum in the big scheme of things however to take from the poor in a time of calamity as I have never seen in my adult life is nothing less then completely deplorable ! And she was exhonorated of two felony charges in the same court date . I am sure it was just a big misunderstanding huh ? And by the way Dixon is scheduled for a perjury trial in March on separate charges for failing to disclose gifts from a boyfriend who is also a developer in Baltimore that gets lucrative tax breaks . Business as usual huh ? More reasons why I am campaigning to be Integrity Czar like I had written in a previous hub ! Developer Patrick Turner said he had bought the cards for the children of Baltimore , now how can that not turn your stomach ?
Now trust me as much as I love San Diego we have our fair share of dirt here too ! And I give alot of local officials here heartburn ! However I believe this is further reasoning in my mind why we need viable third parties in office . And I gotta tell you I really do not care from what pool we elect from I just want a good man or woman calling the shots . I have no doubt that many of you are as fed up as I am .
I know we live in some really tough times . I am sad to say that we are also really divided as any venture into the Hubpages forums will attests . You cannot get any intelligent conversation in there . But I think we can all agree that we are all sick and tired of reading about people of privilege using and abusing said privileges to the detriment of the little folk like you and I . I will also be the first to admit I am not the most wily or intellectual of the many fine writers here in our community . But I do have a very clear and defined sense of right and wrong . And this is pretty clearly wrong . Thank you for letting me rant !

That is deplorable! It reminds me of those commercials where they show you a little kid in some 3rd world country and they tell you that for $1 a day you can help them. They send you a photo (that I am sure they have sent duplicates to another 1000 people) and pretend you are helping that one individual child. In reality its the people in the organization whose pockets and belly's become fatter and they still leave those poor children in the dark. What that Mayor did was disgusting. And the fact that she was exonerated makes me even more sick.....why not make an example of her? But ofcourse her "juice" within the system probably paid off the judge instead.

JJ it is indeed sickening that this is just another ho hum story about politicians . This is so common it barely qualifies as news . She has all the qualifications to be a congressperson for sure !
You surely do have a sense of right and wrong. This is politics everywhere. I lived in Miami for a very very long time and even the Chief of Police drove around in a brand new car from a local dealership. Somehow word got around that he had not purchased it and he had the gull to say it was a demo after about 12 months of driving. And things like this just give me acid reflux..

Tony: would you give up your right to a fair trial? Or, should you be punished for any and every accusation leveled against you? Let the punishment fit the crime, but make sure that the crime is proven in a court of law.
Of course everyone deserves a fair trial . That is not the issue . I just feel well serious accusations are leveled against you , public officials should not be making decisions that affect the public . She was convicted on the charges for use of the cards. And here troubles are far from over .
tony, I wish this was an isolated event but it seems our politicians in large number are just crooks anymore. I would consider this act a felony. That amount of money would mean so much for the poor. Good hub.
Tony - Seems a shame they stopped using the stocks and pillories in Baltimore in the mid 1800's. Seems appropriate here. Maybe we could make her the poster child for bringing them back! Great Hub!
Hi Pamela I am sad to say that this is just commonplace now that it will probably not get any attention . It is just another declaration of the sad state of American politics . Even worse global politics are riddled with corrution now too ! Thx for dropping in .

The problem is, the bigger the problem is, the less people pay attention. We hear so much about all the bad going on in politics, and never any good (which I am doubtful that there is any)that we have become desensitized by it all. Hopefully one day everyone gets mad enough to finally start taking some action. I think it's time for some housecleaning.

Tony Do you ever get the feeling we are beating a dead horse? This sounds like the politics of "say anything often enough and it becomes truth". If the many crimes of liberals are judged to be meaningless petty crimes and simply attempts of opposing parties to discredit anyone, people will start believing and the crimials will never be required to pay the price for their crimes. The biggest crimnals are the maninstream media who protect these scumbags.. Obama, transforming America, you better believe it and Crime does Pay, at least if you are with them!

Great American that first statement in your post is so sad but so true ! And hopefully anyone with half a brain does not listen to the mainstream media. They shell out the biggest collection of half truths around . Paticularly the NY Times and the LA Times two newspapers that are not worth lining the catbox with !

Your absolutely right-it's not the amount, but the principle. 600 compared to the 35 thousand being wasted on flowers and bottled water in Nancy Pelosi's office this past quarter does seem like small change, but all those little ones do add up. Keep up the good fight!

If Ms. Dixon were in Illinois she would have to resign, just as Betty Loren Maltese, one time president of Cicero, had to. Apparently under Maryland law she apparently doesn't have to. But once she realizes that her goose is cooked I'm sure she will. Remember, Nixon and that state's one-time governor, Spiro Agnew, were in the same spot. And the latter was an embezzler at the state level.
I know, I'm just as fed up as you are tony. But why, I ask you, would one politician rat out another if they're all doing the same thing? After all, if I don't rat on you, then you won't rat on me, right? And if I don't push for prosecution, then you won't either. Simple.

And half the time the news you may be listening to, only tells half the story. It's bad when you have to search to get all the facts. And it's terrible that the corruption went on to begin with. Truth from Truth I cannot hide my head in the sand . I really like to write my happy and more fun based hubs but we cannot keep ignoring the dirt that is in our society any further. We really do need an uprising of our citizenry to say that enough is enough. Thank you for posting.
There was a book written years ago titled "The Parlimentary Whores " Its about the politicians being bout by lobbyist, special interest, and greedy power. Look at how the American Congress is spitting on us " Little People".
The limosine liberals who thumb thier political noses down on us like Nancy Pelosi are making millions from the very things they calaim they are against. We see the White Hous eis more secretive than the Nixon Administration ( so say liberal columnist Helen Thomas ) and more in bed with Wall Street than any other past administration. The Teabag members are consiste dof more Democrats than Republicans according to Rasmussen poll/survey. Politicians hide thier financial dealings as the Clinton's did and now have accounts hidden all over the world. China paid Clinton well for the Most Favored Nations Trading Partner and the Clinton Administration gave China and North Korea super computers for " Humanitarian " reasons.West Virginia and most major cities are controlled by political machines keeping the citizens poor while rewarding themselves handsomely. Civil rights leaders are millionaires and do little to raise thier own from poverty and violence. Senators are multi milionaire/billionares yet say, " I know what your'e going through". When the government fear the people we have liberty, when the people fear the government, we have tyrany! We need to rise and demand openness into these political prostitutes finances and MUST have a public referendum on ALL politicians. This is NOT the change we thought we were getting. The Chicago Political Machine is running America and we will be socialist and broke! You get the government you deserve.

Well, Tony, I guess I need to weigh in here as our ministry is based in Baltimore. Unchained Grace Ministries, LLC in association with Holy Truth Temple of Deliverance Ministries operates a large homeless ministry for veterans and nonvets.
Although we are a 501(c)3 Non-Profit, we've been refused assistance continually even though we maintain six homes here in Baltimore City.
We provide not just homes but employment opportunities and we must do it ourselves as the Mayor's Office continually turns us down.

And as I am sure you are well aware Ms. Dixon has now left office as she plead guilty to perjury charges. The evil people do always catches up with them. I am just glad she never got a higher office. I hope your association gets the help it needs and thank you for your comments !
Tony, thank you and yes, we know about the perjury. The important thing for us, though, is to focus on those who have no advocates. No high dollar attorneys. Know what it's like to pull someone out of a dumpster who won the Bronze Star only to be alienated by the VA for having the audacity to ask for a home? He has one now. He has food. He has new clothes. In one week, many more of our veterans will be employed as we'll be celebrating the Grand Opening of our Holy Truth VetsTown Variety Store which will employ 15-20 previously homeless veterans. A purpose with waking up for, don't you think?

Yay for Tony! I love your rants and truths about what is going on. Yer my number one choice for it now. You should run for office and show them how it should be done. that won't happen, for they won't let you. They all need a pink slip, coast to coast from dog catcher to the White House.
