A salute to America - Tony Style
Greetings and Happy 4th of July to all of you hubbers here stateside. And to my many friends I have met here from abroad I would like to wish you a great day as well. Today in the spirit of the day I would like to give a salute to our country as we celebrate our Independence and give you some of the legendary songs and bands that are 100% American made. And even if you are not an American I have a feeling that most of you too will find music by these bands in your collection as well !
Now I also have a vast amount of music from the United Kingdom in my personal collection as well , but this is just for the fun of celebrating the spirit of the holiday for celebrating our nations Independence today. And I just wanted to give you a few happy American made tunes for you to enjoy.I also would like to salute some legendary American Artist . So here is a list of some of the greatest artist from the USA !
#1- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - This unit from the great State of Florida started out in 1977 and has now been on and off around for damn near 40 years. Toms work from the late 70s to the mid 80s is some of the uber classic stuff that we tune into all the time on our classic radio stations daily !
#2 Aerosmith - Hard to believe that is has been damn near 40 years since Aerosmith put out their first album , but indeed the sands of time have brought us to this point. Aerosmith is not just an American Band , they are an American Institution !
#3- KISS- KISS has to be recognized not only because they are Icons , but KISS also does alot for the troops abroad including some live shows that really do not get much ink. And so I want to give Kiss some props !
#4- Lynnrd Skynrrd - A downhome southern flavored rock band who just oozes America. And they also have one of the alltime guitar anthems that all of us over 30 know "Freebird "
#5- Ted Nugent- Terrible Ted has been around for 40 years now. His heyday was definitely in the 70s and all of us know " Cat Scratch Fever " . No matter what your opinion of Ted one thing is for sure , Dude can play some guitar ! He is definitely vocal and very conservative in his political stances , but he shouted down Gloria Allred so he made a fan out of me just for that !
#6- ZZ Top - The liitle ole band from Texas is still going strong and playing multiple dates all the time throughout the globe. Hard to believe that these guys have been around since 1969 but indeed they have. Billy Gibbons has been cited as a favorite guitarist of no less the the Iconic Jim Hendrix. And I fell in love with them in 1974 when I heard the album " Tres Hombres " and " Waitin for the bus/ Jesus just left Chicago " remains to date one of my all time favorite tunes by the trio. ZZ Top is truly an American Institution !
Grand Funk Railroad - We're an American Band
Bon Jovi
Van Halen
Metallica- American metal !
Some more who deserve a shout out !
#7- Kid Rock- Now I am gonna tell ya straight up,I have never been a big Kid Rock fan but Kid Rock constantly performs at bases abroad for our troops so therefore just due to his patriotism I am giving him a shout out !
#8- Grand Funk Railroad - This trio from Flint Michigan always has a special place for me because the album " Closer to Home " was actually the first album I ever purchased with my own money. And the song " We are an American Band " remains a staple of classic rock airplay and has been voted one of the best hard rock songs ever !
#9- Bon Jovi - The guys from New Jersey have been around like 25 years now , that is a damn long time to be on top ! And besides longevity Bon Jovi has been putting out alot of great tunes over the course of that time ! These guys are another great American Institution !
#10- Van Halen- I grew up on these guys and they also have a special place in my heart because they hail from Los Angeles and that is my home turf ! The early Van Halen from 78-85 is just awesome !
No Doubt-The best of OC
Blondie- Great classic and pure New York
The B52s. Georgias best !
REM - Another Georgia great !
Some honorable mentions too !
#11- Metallica - These guys have been around 30 years now ! Starting out in Los Angeles and then aqquiring fame when they moved to San Francisco , Metallica is the standard for Heavy Metal now and are among the American Icons !
#12 - The Ramones- The Ramones turned music on its head in1976 and all modern rock and roll has felt their influence. The boys from New York City are not only punk legends but musical legends as well !
#13- The Beach Boys- Nothing says California and for that matter America like the Beach Boys ! And the Beach Boys are an Institution !
#14- Green Day - Well lets take a look here, Green Day has been around damn near 20 years now ! They have also put out one of the most significant albums of this decade with " American Idiot ".
#15 - Blondie- Another New York City all timer. Blondie came in with the first wave of the punk scene , they combined punk with pop sensibilities and will remain forever legends
#16- No Doubt - No Doubt brought the pop/punk ska genre to the American masses and we are all better for them doing so ! I love this bunch from up north in Orange County !
#17- The B52s- The quartet from Georgia put out some of the most markedly different sounds ever on their debut album in 1978 and are as American as apple pie and baseball !
#18- The whole Motown bunch- Classic R&B/ SOUL came out of Detroit and any artist associated with the sound is Iconic , Marvin Gaye , Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, The Four Tops. Shall I keep going ?
#19- The Seattle grunge sound - Nirvana , Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains are all classic American bands whose fantastic music has always transcended our borders.
#20- Johnny Cash- The Man in black has always transcended country into the Rock and Roll mainstream. He is not legendary for nothing !
If I overlooked any of your favorites I humbly apologize. There are so many great American bands that we just do not have the space to Include them all. But feel free to give them a shout out here and I hope everybody here has a happy 4th . And I hope all of you are healthy happy and safe !
John Doe and X - The 4th of July
Night Ranger- You can still rock in America !

Happy 4th to you Tony. Don't know much about any of those bands, but the videos gave me an idea. Thanks
You Rock, my friend. I really enjoy this information. Thanks for share with us. Thumbs Up for you.
Tony,
Although I am only familiar with a few of these bands, I enjoyed listening to their music.
What a fun hub Tony!
What a great American line-up, Tony! Listened to some - will come back and listen to the others. And has Green Day really been around 20 years? Seems like only yesterday when I first heard their Boulevard of Broken Dreams and loved it - still do. Super hub - as always, Tony. Hope you had a great 4th of July!
Loved your tribute, tony style.
Love this hub tony!
Tony, Some great rockers! I loved this hub as most of the groups were ones I've listened to a lot. Thanks.
Tony great selection. I am a huge music fan and so many great ones here. Tom Petty live is something else. ZZ still going strong, X were pioneers as of course were the Ramones. The first Ramones album, Ramones was the first album I ever got when I was a young guy all those years ago. The great Johnny Cash - there are just so many great artists aren't there.
great reflection of the all american rock bands, you've highlighted some greats here and nothing beats a good rock and roll tune... :)
Yes sir some masterpieces you got here.
OMG! Bon Jovi, Kiss, Van Halen, Metallica... think I died and went to heaven! What memories. I'm so old.....
Fun hub, great list. Love Bon Jovi - it is amazing that they are still selling out concerts like crazy. What other hairband from the 80's is still doing that? KISS is performing at the North Dakota State Fair this summer - I have already seen them twice, though!
Awesome hub, many of my favorites. ZZ TOP #1.
YEAH!!
Best ever American export is Rock n'Roll!!!
I love just about all of these artists.
Keep on Rockin in the Free World
[OK yeah!! I know he's Canadian but what the hell :-) ]
Very nice! I thought of my brother when I saw the title, but then I remembered this is "All-American" and that his favorite band is the German Scorpions band! :)
Not a band here I can disagree with. Great hub.
What great choices! Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. Can't believe Bon Jovi has been around for 25 years. And still going strong. Happy belated 4th to you.
Great choices
How could the Clash ever be "so bored with the USA" with an all-star, all-time phenomenally GREAT lineup like this?
Thank you, Tony, for NOT including Chicago (gag) or the Eagles (not my cuppa).
Rock on, my friend!
MM
P.S. Violent Femmes -- American Music!
Loved this, dude. I've seen most of these bands live and you've done a good job of picking out the cream of the crop. Thanks for the KISS mention. Few are aware of how much they've done for the troops.
