Meet our young Heroine !
Like anybody with a pulse , I suffer from utter exhaustion just trying to even watch the news. We have oil spills , terrorism and political division at unprecedented levels. We elect so called leaders and we are consistently dissapointed. And like much of the globe we are all searching for a hero . a gesture of selflessness , anything that can restore our faith in our fellow man. We know we cannot find this hero in Government. But all of a sudden out of the blue , we get an 11 year old heroine upon which we can smile upon and look up to. Folks I would like you to meet a artistic young 11 year old young lady from Islip , New York named Olivia Bouler. Our young friend Olivia is a lover of our winged friends . Four days after the explosion of the deepwater oil rig Olivia had some concerns which led her to take action after the fourth consecutive day of the spill ! Seems to me Olivia went into action alot faster then most of the so called adults whom we are counting on to get this ecological disaster under control !
Olivias Dad originates from the Alabama gulf region and she had spent some vacations there. So when our young Heroine got wind of the Deepwater Horizon explosion her thoughts turned to the native birds of the gulf region. So Olivia wasted no time in writing a letter to the Audubon Society saying she would like to help in any way she could. And stated her plan of action by saying she would create drawings , sell them and donate any money made from the drawings to help out the conservation group. And so now Olivia spends most of her early mornings and hours after school as well as a good chunk of her weekends plying her artistry. And thus far the proceeds from her efforts have netted a reported $80,000 thus far and I believe since the publication of the report it has actually gone in excess of $100,000. It Is nice to see such a selfless act. So Olivia I hope you go on to greatness and get something into The Smithsonian !

Another good young human being
There is probably no more self absorbed Individual on the planet then your average teenager. Most are thinking about their latest texting , twitters and proms as well as the weekend. However I am happy to report that we have one who is a gem amongst her peers. I would like to Introduce you to Taylor Spencer from the town of Gladwyne Pennsylvania. Taylor was to celebrate her 17th birthday and thinking about the suffering in Haiti decided that instead of recieving the usual IPOD full of her favorite tunes or a Ann Taylor gift certificate she asked those who would be attending her birthday party to give donations for a relief fund for those in Haiti. And with over 200 people in attendance Taylor was able to wrangle up $8000.00 which went towards the purchase of eight Shelter Boxes. A Shelter Box contains a ten person tent , a water purification system , a cooking stove , mosquito nets , a childrens activity pack , and other essentials. So to our college bound young friend I just want to say Taylor your parents obviously taught you all of the best qualities that encompass a human being. And you and your parents are both getting a big salute from me !
So folks I just wanted to take a break from my usual political ranting because like all of you I am just utterly fed up with political backbiting , oil drenched pelicans , and war and potential war all over the globe. And I just needed you to know that in spite of these dark times we find ourselves in the midst of , there is still good going on. And I know we can all use some good news these days. I for one still believe that people are still good at the end of the day. Do you notice whenever disaster happens people tend to rally around one another for the common good ? So today I just wanted to celebrate the good of the human spirit . I just am astounded that my Inspiration came from an 11 year old named Olivia and a teenager named Taylor ! Some of us adults here could stand to follow their lead !

Isn't it pleasant and inspiring to read about the actions of two such remarkable and unselfish young people? You both are heroes as far as I'm concerned: Olivia and Taylor. May you lead rewarding and happy lives.

I'm glad the younger generation shows some initive and leadership through their actions. They're not all talk they take action.

If only or alleged leadership cold or would take their cue from two selfless individuals you've highlighted here. To do what they did required a vision. A vision of improving the quality of life for others including animal life. Some of these clowns, unfortunately, discount the welfare of the poor and the animals who cannot speak for themselves. There are those who can speak for themselves though nobody listens. Until the damage has been done. Thank God for these two and those like them!
Thank you for sharing this with us. It's easy to get depressed about the oil spill sometimes.

Petra maybe we should put these children in charge ! Then seem to be doing more then anyone on Capitol Hill. But I would not want to put them through the stress !
Right on Tony, great to hear this. I think often we moan and complain endlessly and forget that we are in charge or our situations. Great to hear these 2 stories and how they made a conscious choice to do good rather than jump on the complaint wagon.
By the way, her last point is the most important and one I have made several times. Human beings can not live without nature, however, nature can live without human beings.
LRC I think all of us right now are a little world weary and I think all of us need to have a little positive reinforcement to just keep us going from day to day. So I really thank these two young gals for giving us some inspiration at a time we could all use some. Very motivating. Shows u how much we underestimate the ability of one selfless individual. Both Taylor and Olivia are self leading individuals. Most politicians, usually start any political agenda by pointing fingers, then snoozing for a while, and mabey some useless action -all while having the lust of fame in mind- . On the contrary those 2 ladies, started by action without being swayed. Great hub, rated it up and will be following ya =)
