Good news in a bad year.
Good day hubbers. It has been quite some time since I have written a hub. I have been going through a period of what I call disaster fatigue and just have not felt the motivation to write. 2011 has not been a very good year for us thus far or for that matter the world as a whole. Our year started out with a congresswoman getting shot and Americans quick to point at each other and blame the opposition for the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and after the dust settled it turns out Jared Lee Loughner was nothing more then an apolitical psycho with a fixation on her. There have been multiple natural disasters New Zealand , Australian floods and the one that got to me for some major reason the earthquake in Japan and the ensuing damage that came with the tsunami and nuclear disaster that has followed. And in our obsession with heightened partisan bickering that disaster is still being played out and is far from finished. But I am sure we have all forgotten about that one now. Because now we are more then enamored with the bluster of one Donald Trump and a royal wedding that in the scope of what goes on in this world today both are totally meaningless. And yes my tone is very somber because there is still alot of anger that we are no longer a country united but a country divided.
But lo and behold Sunday May 1st finally brought a major news story which has given all of us who care to participate a brief respite from the constant bombardment from calamity that we recieve from our overly saturated media driven lives. And that is the story that finally we have hunted down and executed public enemy number one Osama Bin Laden. And I can say with a fair amount of certainty that we really needed this shot in the arm of good news. In a time when starting your car up in the morning cost $5.00 and TSA agents are patting down 6 year olds who are on their way to Disneyworld we get a major psychological boost. And yes we needed this boost. If you are anything like me as you have watched this world explode you might be reduced to watching Sienfeld reruns as looking at todays headlines and writing commentary about your observations is not much fun. But finally we have got the figurehead of what we consider to be evil personified. And I am grateful for that. And also apparently we have found a plethora of intelligence that may aid us in further dismantling the network of evil that has made it their mission in life to destroy our way of life.
So now that we have reached the first part of May even though the mission of dismantling Al queda is far from done we have helped this nation psychologically at a time when we are obviously in need of some good news. I unlike many will give Obama some credit for letting the military show it's teeth for a change instead of hobbling them with a bad set of rules of engagement. I say let's get the hell out of Afghanistan we don't have the money to stay there. Let's quit the charade of Pakistan being a friend because anybody with an ounce of common sense knows that's not the case. And we obtained the name of OBLs courier through enhanced interrogation methods, you know the ones Eric Holder doesn't like ? So for those who don't like them guess what ? They work ! And for today I am going to allow myself just like I did yesterday to feel good about the country I love and be proud and patriotic which is nowadays called extremism.
One last thought, I remember in the days after 9-11 there were no political parties , no libs , no conservatives no ideoligies we all shared one common trait , at that time we were just Americans ! And on what should have been a time when a nation collectively hugged itself for the good fortune of ridding itself of an evil figurehead some here on the hubpages forums and on other sites I visit chose to make that a wedge issue as well. To them I say BLOW IT OUT YOUR A** ! This is one of those times when we as a nation should come together. What is it gonna take for us to unify again ? So I am glad that we have rid ourselves of the scourge of Osama Bin Laden. Now you may resume with your partisan bickering !

Yes, everybody wants peace. The dreaded man Osama is no more. But will the peace return?
I agree. The usual suspects are circling and asking the usual annoying questions. The only thing I care about is that Bin Laden is dead.
A brilliantly written hub so thank you for sharing.
Take care
Eiddwen.
Glad to have you back, tony. What you have written here makes complete sense and I thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Been one hell of year so far Tony?. It might transcend last year where I was always wondering what sort of nonsense we are required to put up with.

Thanks for a thoughtful hub. We are Americans. We do have much to be thankful for. I like your comment that "our nation should come together"
You echo the feelings of many. The discouragement with the multitude of circumstances surrounding Americans has had a dampening effect. The day I heard the news, I thought I just couldn't be prouder of our Navy Seals. I couldn't be prouder of the deligent work done by Obama and the CIA, and all the military cooperation. Our nation provided the justice we needed and Bin Laden has been jusifiably paid back. There was definitely help from the steps taken by the Bush administration, but it wasn't from torture techniques. The U.S. citizens must get used to the fact we will always be hearing two sides of the story and we will rarely find out which side is telling the truth. Let us all agree to disagree and accept that we are all a very happy nation that has been made to feel whole again. Great hub Tony.
Tony, I'm glad to see you back also. Very good hub that I agree with completely. The bottom line, Osama is dead. Rated up.
Hey Tony,
You got a new look! I haven't been so active in HP lately so first time I saw your new avatar! I missed our interaction but have been busy elsewhere.
Yup, this is good news indeed! Well written hub my friend! Rated up!
Hey Tony, it's my job in life to be the guy with the unpopular ideas. But point 1. We gave the Nazis due process at Nuremberg, so Osama should have had the same, and 2. It's actually illegal for any U.S. president to be involved in an assassination, so now I think Obama deserves some due process.
Now of course realistically I can say that I also agree with you here. It seems a huge waste of money to do all of that for someone that - even if not actually guilty, would like to be guilty for exactly what we've blamed him for, so why waste our own time and money?
