9-11 The ultimate hate crime.
78I got an Idea ! Let's put a Mosque here !
A peaceful morning and a never forgotten morning
I have been on the planet for quite some time now and needless to say there are moments both joyous and mortifying that will be with me until the God of my understanding decides my number is up and holds me accountable for how I have conducted myself in this life. Fortunately it is not today. And one of the moments that will still be crystalized in my vision as I review the parts of my life that are behind me was the Tuesday morning of September 11th of 2001. I get up very early for work as I am addicted to the quiet and peacefulness of the early morning and if there is a spiritual moment in any day for me it is the quiet solitude of being up just before the day breaks and the sun shines on the landscape.
I had my smoke and powered down my first cup of coffee as I was looking at the surf coming in as I was living across the street from the beach at that time. I went home shaved and prepared for another day of the mundane rituals that go with the working life of the ordinary man. I do not listen to the radio nor do I turn on the morning news because a man taught me a long time ago that it disturbs the voice within. I have always considered him to be a very wise man. And since 1985 I have continued that practice. So I ambled on to my mundane job that is part of the routine of my mundane life. I still have the same job by the way. And these days I am grateful for the mundane routine that is my life. I arrive into work and walk into the office and immediately my inner radar is starting to go to work. Something is wrong ! Something is very wrong ! I look at the people with whom I have worked for the past few years there faces all have the same dumbfounded and confused and fearful look. My brain is already starting to shuffle through all the scenarios of what has transpired. Who got fired ? Who is getting fired ? Are they going to fire me ? I walk up to my boss at the time Rob. I say, Dude what is up here ? Rob turns to me and says , You mean you haven't heard ? Heard what Rob ? All of a sudden I hear the report on the radio in his office. It is 7AM Pacific time. And America is under attack !
This is the real picture of hate !
A surreal week
Now I know what has everyone on edge and as I listen to the news reports and look at my fellow workers and associates none of us are saying a word and none of us have to. The look in the eyes of those with whom I toil with daily are all asking the same question, Could this really be happening ? By the time I had gotten to work Flight 11 and Flight 175 had crashed into both towers. Flight 77 had hit the Pentagon as I was making my commute to work. By the time I had gotten to work and started looking around Flight 93 had just gone down in the Pennsylvania farmland overtaken by a bunch of heroes whom sadly I will never get to meet. And the most horrific thing of all a friend of mines Mom was on the flight that hit the south tower. I was not to find out about this till Saturday of that surreal week. All of us are working through the day , but no one is really working though. We are all preoccupied with our own little set of thoughts. I get home and my neighbors are all wearing the same look on their faces that I see at my office. I have no doubt that I am wearing the same expression. I proceed to my television and turn on the cable news channels that are all showing the same horrific footage and I find myself repulsed and mesmerized at the same time. This was to be my life for the next couple of days maybe even a week. And even the beauty of a San Diego beach cannot divert my attention from the horror movie that is real life being played out in front of me. I can remember all of this like it was yesterday. And in some ways it still feels like it.
Palestine celebrates 9-11 !
And I am the hater ?
There were no memories from 9-11 that I would like to keep in a time capsule. I would like to forget that day if it were at all possible. But part of me feels responsible for keeping that memory alive. If I can take away one thing that was somewhat of a positive from the experience of those days nine years ago it was this. On the days after 9-11 when the Initial shock that we collectively felt as a nation subsided something very special happened. For at least a week there were no Democrats and no Republicans , there were no classes of people, there were no ethnicity's to be found. From what I observed 3000 miles away and from watching the news there were only Americans and that was it. I cannot recall a time in my 50 years of existence that we were more united. And as a citizen I had never felt prouder of us collectively , we were truly one. Nine years later it amazes me how far down the scale we have gone. It astonishes me how so many have forgotten a time not so far back and that some whom we shall call mainstream media and quite a few of our own citizenry now treat 9-11 like it was just a car accident ! It repulses me. And then when I say that an Imam should have the sensitivity and courtesy to move a mosque a little farther away from a site that is the Pearl Harbor and the Kennedy Assassination of my generation you call me a hater and an Islamophobe . Right Newsweek ? The Munich Olympics, the USS Cole, two embassies attacked , the Iran hostage situation of 1979, a dutch filmmaker gets killed for making a less then nice film about Islam, a Dutch cartoonist has to hide with his Grandson in a panic room so he does not get killed by an Islamist extremists. And I am the crazy because I do not want a Mosque at the ground of one of the darkest moments in American history ? I laugh at you when you say its I who is not tolerant. What short memories you have ! You see I believe that respect is a two way street. You want my respect ? You show me some ! What goes around comes around. And one more final thought I have always maintained that 9-11 was significant in more then one way. As I look around I also believe that this world we live in started spinning at an out of control pace since that day and one good look at any news service I believe supports my assertion. I just want all of you especially the ones that seem to have forgotten to remember 9-11 and I want you to really hone in on how you felt that day. Because 9-11 was the ultimate hate crime ! And it seems that somehow you have erased this incident from your mind !

Tony - Well said my brother. We will remember all of our days lad. Everything for our generation is divided into before 9-11 and after. God bless you lad and all those lost on that terrible day, and God Bless our troops and the Heroes of Flight 93...
Tony, Hmrjmr was right about there is life before 9-11 and life after. It is beyond me as to how anyone in America could forget that day and not have some hatred concerning those memories of all the Muslims celebrating around the world. This mosque they want to build is another painful slap in our face. The world just doesn't make sense anymore. Thanks Tony for this hub.
You are right. This is true hate. Never forget. Fool me once, your fault , fool me again, my fault.
Keep on hubbing!
It isn't erased from my mind and it never will be - ever. Obviously - some have forgotten and somehow turned this entire historic - as you put it - hate crime around - but I believe America is once again awakening. We lost our way for a time - we elected Mr. Obama - but I believe that America is once again, rising from the ashes. Poignant piece here - well done! Carol
Good Hub Tony, I will link this. There is not much I can say, I'll just take my moment of silence.
You go Tony! You make some really excellent points here, in my mind, especially the one about "respect being a two way streeet". It is insulting to everyone that died that day, to everyone that lost someone that day, and to all American's who felt the pain of that day to turn around and build something so dear to the people that inflicted said pain so near the site of such horror.
Thank you, tony, for this poignant memorial of that unbelievably devastating event. How can people have such short memories? I know the families and friends of those who lost their lives will never forget 9/11, the "ultimate hate crime". The rest of us must never forget either.
Tony0724: Even as a Canadian, I was brought to my knees, as though someone had just punched me and knocked the wind out of me when this happened. I had just awakened and just the opposite of you I walked to mt living room switched on my TV. and every station was showing plane one hitting the first tower, in replay. Then in reality, I watched tower two get hit, and I knew that from that moment, life would never be the same again.
I remember thinking, here comes WW-III., and it has started here in North America first being attacked, where will it end?
Brother Dave.
You are right, tragedy unites people. But why do we need tragedy to become united? How sad it is!
I was in Israel that day, getting my immigration papers together to move to US soon to get married . I called my fiancé and he could not talk.
Israeli people were hurting together with Americans, all the flags in Israel were lowered.
TV stations from Gaza were broadcasting jubilant music with Arabs jubilating and burning American flags....
I did not forget it. I will never forget it.
Who forget this, they betray.
We saw the faces of Muslims celebrating in Paterson, New Jersey. They were dancing wildly in the streets and I will never forget that day. Not all our enemies carry guns and blow themselves up. Some dance in the streets at the horrors that others commit..
I am with you up intil the Mosque, simply because it is not a Mosque and not at ground zero. I too think 911 is one of the worst days of my life, and the life our country. And I agree, days after we were all Americans as it should be.
But what we can't do is change who we are or our priniples because of 911. Those that did that horrible crime that day declared war on our prinicples and values, if they are destoryed, then they win.
But, on a personal note, a very moving tribute and thank you for sharing your thougths. And as always, well written and a great read.
Ya, personally I don't think they SHOULD do it. The question is can they and that is where I disagree with much of what is being said. Haven't won over my heart or my mind except for what I believed before 911 - they have the right. But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
I'm not sure why Americans have not woken up to the fact that the Demo-Repubs both sold out the Constitution when they put the "usurper" from Kenya in office.
they are basically the same as the British monarchy we fought over 200 years ago for our independence.
nice hub
Everyone who watched the aftermath of 9/11 on TV saw the part of NY not usually seen - ordinary men and women working at Ground Zero searching for survivors. These people know very well this is Islam's 'victory' mosque. And these are the people who won't allow it to be built.
Oh I'll never forget that day, As I stood in shock listening and watching as the planes flew into the towers, after the second plane hit the second tower I knew something evil was a foot and my first thought was my children, I knew I needed to gather my children as what else could happen would no longer shock me, we crossed over into a place where limits did not remain. My daughter who was at kindergarten has not forgetten the crippling pause that fell over all the adults... It was noted even to a five year old. Great reminder of 911 and when it all REALLY began! Peace :)
I know exactly what you are saying. They want tolerance but they don't reciprocate. They tell the media that moderate Islam has been vocal against terrorists? Where? When? I consider myself pretty well read and I've surely not seen or heard it. The fact that we even have to have this conversation sickens my heart. Great hub!
Tony my man, I'm with you 100%! This Imam is being exposed for what he is. The last couple of days, I have finally seen Muslim's speaking out against Rauf.
I am a proud AMERICAN also, and will always stand with you. A sad thing is that most or all of the sub-humans take were involved in 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia, but did not represent them. If they had, Bush would have blown them apart. Obama would have sent representatives to talk.
I have a friend that was in one of the small buildings that survived. I know my pain can never come close to hers. H
Tony0724 you are so on the money with the line in one of your above comments "this is not a religious issue although the left wants to paint it as one". The left uses this tactic all the time. Keith Olbermann keeps stating the same thing along with Alan Colmes on FOX. Freedom of religion for all in the USA. That is in the constitution. Although some would argue ..."except for Christians". Try putting a nativity scene at the Ground Zero site and see what happens.
Nice Hub Tony, sometimes I think we should start each day with that scene where the towers are coming down...we all need to be reminded WHAT is at stake, and WHO it is that want us to be destroyed.
You did a great job with this one...
You are absolutely right its a matter of Respect. I cannot respect Muslims for wanting to put a "Community Center/Mosque" at ground zero, since they can't seem to respect Americans for disliking the idea. This was an amazing Hub. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
ty Tony0724 I am truly glad I came across this hub (was reading several other hubs and noticed this as a similar topic)you write beautifully and the memories of that date came flooding back as I read this hub. For my (our) generation 911 will unfortunately be our "Where were you when Kennedy was shot legacy." I was descending a stairwell in a Corp building in Pittsburgh PA that was evacuated that day. It took twenty minutes for us to reach the lobby. It has never left my mind knowing how (by being in a similar environment)those people trapped in those stairways in the Twin Towers probably felt.

Tony,
This infamous attack is personal since 9/11 is my birhday which I haven't celebrated on that day since the year 2000 as described in my Hub.
